A Plea For Common Sense

By Michael Todd

First, I would like to start by saying this is a reflection on current events and why we must address them. There are problems with both political parties, and I hold them both accountable.  The majority of Americans have the same goals for our country, yet politicians create division over semantics by implying dubious intentions, such as racism, sexism, etc. Playing on the generated hatred for Trump that they created, government elites are taking advantage of this and subverting the Constitution.

People don’t naturally hate each other; it’s the government that propagates discord and encourages the hatred of those that oppose them. It is easier for the government to control people when given something to fear and then offered a solution to protect them from that fear. But to receive that solution, people must willingly relinquish their freedoms to the government.

“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

Benjamin Franklin

So, what happens when you disagree with something the political party you support does? What if they do something egregious that you are entirely against? Are you going to fall in line and shift blame to the other party? Or are you going to speak out? These are serious questions that need to be asked of everyone because the actions being taken to root out dissenting voices and thoughts are dangerous and totalitarian. We are witnessing the implementation of everything Donald Trump was falsely accused of doing.  But this is not about Trump; it’s about America and the future of our country. We must set aside our petty differences and take a hard look at what’s happening to our country.

Democrats in Washington, D.C. have outsourced the violating of people’s rights to their corporate allies. Under the guise of preventing disinformation and rooting out extremism, they have restricted and removed access to many avenues of dissent to their actions. This doesn’t just affect the Right, but everyone since it forces conformity and allows politicians to control the narrative.

They’ve ordered a complete stand-down of our military under the guise of rooting out so-called white nationalists. We are essentially witnessing the implementation of a loyalty test to ensure only ardent supporters of the current administration are in positions of power.

Everyone’s bank records are now being accessed to track purchases, to identify so-called domestic terrorists. Domestic terrorism is a free-flowing term that can quickly be changed to include anyone disagreeing with the government.  This holds far-reaching consequences because it destroys one of the main barriers erected by the founding fathers (4th Amendment) to protect citizens from an authoritarian government. We have these protections to prevent the government from leveeing accusations against us and taking or records out of context to support their claims. The idea that if you have nothing to hide, then you are safe is a fantasy. The government has vast resources, and if left unchecked, corrupt politicians will wield those tools for their benefit.

Amendment IV

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

We see an extensive authoritarian power-grab controlled by a small and privileged group for corrupt and selfish purposes. Why else would they still have barricades and thousands of troops patrolling the capital in Washington DC to protect only them?  Because they are purging anyone that doesn’t think like them from every facet of society and government, creating a dystopian nightmare reminiscent of a coup d’état. You have media personalities on CNN and MSNBC suggesting putting people in internment camps, drone strikes against Trump supporters, and forcing conservatives out of society. These are not the words and actions of a political party wanting unity; they want submission and will do anything to obtain it.

Not only is this unAmerican, but it flies in the face of everything this country stands for. So we must ask ourselves, are we going to allow America to become a totalitarian state, or are we going to protect the rights and liberties we currently have for future generations to enjoy? How do the actions we are witnessing strengthen and unify our country? America is a beacon of hope to the rest of the world because we cherish life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Without that foundation, we will become just another country in a world of states diminishing their citizens’ rights.
